I just spent an amazing day viewing and photographing bald eagles along the Delaware River northwest of Port Jervis, NY. With Ray Carlier as our guide, Ray, his friend Bob and I experienced the ultimate eagle viewing spectacle. We arrived on Plank Road near the Mongaup River and Rio Reservior shortly after sunrise to be greeted by 20+ eagles. Thanks to Ray's loan of some big glass I was able to fill the frame with eagles all morning. In order to not spook the birds, eagle viewing etiquette requires that eagle viewers remain in their cars. So the challenge for me became shooting with 600mm of non-image-stabilized lens handheld in a car. Next trip I'll up the ISO and accept a little noise in exchange for higher shutter speeds and depth of field. I encourage you to take a day in January or February to view these magnificent birds. The Eagle Institute of Barryville, NY provides great information on eagle viewing including a Map of the area. Please share the experience by viewing my Slideshow.
